Berwick Resident Receives Tattersall's Award

Berwick youth worker Scott Wellard received a Tattersall's Award for Enterprise and Achievement, following his work with “Operation Newstart”.

Operation Newstart, a partnership between Victoria Police and the Department of Education and Training, is designed to assist students who are experiencing difficulties at school. The program engages youth in high challenge, outdoor activities to build their confidence and help them realise their full potential. The program aims to encourage youth to continue their education and provides them with the opportunity to develop news skills and positive attitudes.

Scott's enthusiasm for youth work began when he finished high school and embarked on a working holiday in Europe. He gained employment as a store manger in a supermarket in Sheffield, England. Scott was so bothered by the plight of local youth who would come to the store to steal food until pension day, he set up a store tab to ensure that those that needed food received it without breaking the law, and on the condition that the money was repaid at the end of the week. “They’d always come back later in the week to pay off the tab,” Scott says. “‘So you could say I became a youth worker by accident. I just continued from there.”

“I enjoy working with young people. When I was a kid I was given a lot of chances. People never gave up on me. This is a way to say thank you to all those people who have helped me,” he said.

About The Award
The Tattersall's Monthly Award for Enterprise and Achievement consists of a personal cheque of $5,000 for Scott Wellard and a cheque for $15,000 for Scott’s nominated not for profit organisation, which will be announced at a presentation on February 28.

“The Tattersall's Award for Enterprise and Achievement is one of Tattersall's most significant community initiated programs that honours those prepared to 'have a go', whether it be overcoming physical disabilities, heroic deeds or helping someone in need. Scott Wellard a great example of what this award represents, having demonstrated persistence and determination above the norm to help youth in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne,” said Tattersall’s Sponsorships Manager, Peter Franich.

Scott Wellard, along with eleven Tattersall's Monthly Award for Enterprise and Achievement recipients, are in the running to win the 2007 Tattersall's Annual Award for Enterprise and Achievement, with a $15,000 personal prize and a further $75,000 for the recipients chosen beneficiary. The award will be announced at the Park Hyatt in Melbourne in August 2007.
