We are aware of the increasing number and variety of scams (and SPAM) perpetrated on society today, particularly with the growth of internet and e-mail technology. Prize win notifications proporting to be from various lottery operators (including Tattersall’s) have been prevalent for some time.
Recently we have also become aware of emails purporting to be from Tattersall's suggesting that the recipient has outstanding uncollected winnings as a result of “errors to our winner notification system back in 2001”. This communication cites the “Victorian Gaming Commission” and provides Tattersall’s and Gamblers Help contact telephone numbers. Recipients will also note that the email advises them to present their “ticket” in person to a post office box. We wish to advise that no such errors occurred, that Tattersall’s does not use a “winner notification system” and that the ticket numbers cited do not correspond with Tattersall’s ticket numbering format.
In respect to general “prize win noticiations” we strongly advise all persons who receive correspondence (whether via email, post or phone) notifying them of a prize won in a Tattersall’s lottery, that confirmation of that win should be sought directly from Tattersall’s before responding to any such correspondence, particularly if a request for information, such as personal or banking details, is being sought to enable the payment or “release” of prize funds.
Importantly, if you have received a notification of a lottery win but have not (or do not recall having) purchased an entry in a Tattersall’s lottery through the Tattersall’s Internet Lotteries Website or an authorised Accredited Representative or Reseller, chances are the notification is not genuine. After all, there has never been a truer saying than “You’ve gotta be in it – to Win it!”.
